Can Chiropractic Adjustments help my baby sleep better?

Many times babies have problems sleeping especially in the very beginning. While this is quite normal and expected to some degree, because you know they wake up, eat every few hours, have to go to the bathroom and then need a diaper change. But if your baby just can't fall asleep, or stay asleep for periods of time even after they have even after they have a full belly, a very specific and gentle chiropractic adjustment might be the answer. Which is worse a thick wallet in your back pocket or high heels for causing pain in your back?

Well, both of them can be instrumental in causing compensation and imbalances in your pelvis and in your lower back. But let's start with the wallets first. When I grew up as a kid, gentleman placed the wallet in his back pocket. As we aged the wallet became a little bit thicker as we added a little bit more plastic and of course some cash. Placing the wallet in our back pocket, the pelvis, or buttock region becomes elevated on that side. What this does is cause a tilting from one side to the left, producing a imbalance in the lower lumbar and sacral region of the spine. What initially seems as something simple, leads to compensation effects that will eventually cause irritation and pain on the lower spine and lumbar nerve regions. What it also does is cause a pinching of the lumbar and sacral nerves giving you lower back pain, shooting down into your legs and numbness in the toes. Read More

To Sit or Stand? That is the Question.

To sit or stand, that is the question.... in the process of my day, I get asked several times would it be better if I stood or sat at work. The way I answer this question is we as humans were not designed to either sit or stand all day, but through the day we should have variations in sitting, standing and movement all throughout the day, so that our body does not get used to or become lazy by staying in one position for too long of a time. Have You Ever Adjusted Someone Famous?

I do get asked many times... have I ever adjusted anyone famous. Well over the last 31 years I don't really recall of anyone really famous and it's not that I haven't or wanted to if it would maybe happen, but I have chosen more of a simple practice that is just composed of families and their friends in my community. Certain dynamics are involved adjusting famous people, and I chose to really not be a part of that. I have chose just to enjoy a health centered practice that works on the families which include all the great grandparents, grandparents, the parents, kids, the grandkids in my local community that I grew up myself. What does the Curves in this picture have to do with your Spine?

Well, the curves in this fence are symbolic as to the proper cervical thoracic and lumbar curves, that your spine needs to be stronger, stable, and flexible. Why are you may think that if your spine was straight, it would be stronger that is not necessarily the case. A straight spine will weaken the overall biomechanics of the spinal region, causing injury, tension reduced range of motion and pain. Read More

My 1st Chiropractic patient?

As a Chiropractor, I often get asked questions from parents of special needs children on how a chiropractor can help? During my time at Chiropractic school, I had the opportunity to intern at the Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa. My 1st patient at chiropractic school was a 7 year old boy with Spina Bifida Myelomeningocele. His name was Johnny. His condition is where his spinal cord was not protected by his spinal vertebra and exposed which required extensive surgery. He had a heart of gold and was in a wheel chair. Johnny had many bathroom and health sickness problems. I was able to adjust him for my entire internship (1 year) and was able to improve his overall health. I know adjusting Johnny allowed me to appreciate and see what chiropractic can do for children’s health and well being. At Palmer College, the staff understood the importance and could see the benefits that chiropractic care had on many children. After treatment, his mom would report improvement in mood, less colds and ear infections, and improvement in his constipation. In fact, chiropractic re-assessments showed improvements in physical strength, balance, posture and mobility. Read More

How to Extend the Effects of Your Chiropractic Adjustment

Depending on the things you do after your visit to the chiropractor, the effects of your treatment can last days or just a few hours. Fortunately, you can extend the positive effects of your adjustments by following a few simple guidelines. Pay Attention to Your Posture Poor posture can contribute to spinal misalignments, tight muscles and other uncomfortable symptoms. Although you may feel better after the adjustment, your results won't last very long if you slouch or spend hours hunched over your laptop or phone. When you use your phone or another digital device, hold it at eye level if possible. Constantly looking down at devices puts enormous strain on your neck and may even cause permanent damage to your spine if you don't change your habits. Read More

Never Underestimate the Power of the Body

Never underestimate the power of the body to be self-healing and self-regulating when there is no interference on the nervous system. Nature has the incredible power of innate (God given) wisdom on the body to secrete digestive juices when you eat food, increase your heart rate when you run, constrict your pupils when a bright light shines in your eye or shiver the muscles to warm the body when you get cold. I Don't Believe In Chiropractic...

Few times a week, I often hear that… you know “I just don't believe in chiropractic”. My response to the statement is not defensive but engaging and educating in the health conversation. Which, I understand why you may not believe in chiropractic, but it's not about a belief or a religion. Chiropractic is principled in allowing the body to work and function at 100% through a specific chiropractic adjustment. Read More

Why Do I need X-rays?

So, Dr. Joe why do you have to take x-rays. Well, the reason for that is not only to see what injuries or traumas that you may have experienced during your life, but to also rule out something that they may be there that we not be able to know without an x-ray. Read More

What does a Tree and your Vertebrae have In Common?

This is a very interesting picture regarding the incredible power and adaption of nature. This tree grew around the fence that was placed too near to it. As the tree grew larger in size, it changed, and adapted to the forces and stresses that the steel fence placed on it. This is called "Wolfs Law", which means that your spine or bones just like the tree, will mold themselves based upon the amount of forces or stress that they are placed under. The more stress and strain that you place on the spinal vertebra, your body will not only adapt, conform, and react to these additional stressors. These stressors can be in the form of improper posture, bad ergonomics or repetitive habits. Or it could be where you were involved in a auto accident, a slip or fall, which may have knocked/thrown your spine out of alignment, which caused your body to adapt to these misalignments. Your Weak Link

The Weak Link I believe is in your neck. This area is the most neglected area and overlooked and not exercised in society today. While it is estimated that over 80% of the population have back pain at one point in their lives and this most common complaint in my chiropractic office. We all focus on CORE and back exercises which is essential to help with low back strength and stability because we sit most of the day. But according to both Spine and Pain Journals, neck pain has an annual prevalence rate exceeding 30% among adults in the United States. Nearly 50% of individuals will continue to experience some degree of neck pain or frequent flareups of pain also. Among adults 20 to 70% will experience neck pain that interferes with their activities of daily living. Statistically, neck pain is consistently ranked in the top five disabling disorders in the United States Read More
