Many times babies have problems sleeping especially in the very beginning. While this is quite normal and expected to some degree, because you know they wake up, eat every few hours, have to go to the bathroom and then need a diaper change. But if your baby just can't fall asleep, or stay asleep for periods of time even after they have even after they have a full belly, a very specific and gentle chiropractic adjustment might be the answer.
There is a tremendous amount of stress and pressure that is exerted on the babies body during the birth process. Many times this process can result in a misalignment in the upper part of the infants neck when they were born. Dr. Gutman reports that over 80% of children will have a misalignment in the upper neck region due to the birth process because of this this event. Their delicate little spine and nervous system may be going through pressure or stress on the nervous system or maybe even leaning, or tilting (Torticollis) to one side or the other. This may be causing additional muscle tension or compensations on a muscle group in their lower back or neck areas. This resulting extra stress on the nervous system may make it very difficult for the baby to relax, be comfortable and fall asleep. It has been my experience that a very specific chiropractic adjustment can make a big difference on this sleeping problem.
Correcting these imbalances in their delicate spine is what chiropractors I've been doing for many years. Chiropractic adjustments, restore balance in the infants, nervous system and spinal region reducing the stress and tension on the musculoskeletal system. This reduces the pressure and tension that is on their nervous system. The chiropractic adjustment is a very safe, gentle and simple process. The key of the chiropractic adjustment is to work with the structure of the infants body so that it calms down the sympathetic nervous system, which is the body's response to stress. While at that young age babies don't have the stress as we do as adults, they are still very aware of what's going on in their environment, especially with loud noises, dogs barking, television on or too much activity that may be going on that will trigger the babies sympathetic nervous system.
A specific chiropractic adjustment will help soothe and restore a state of calmness and their nervous system. This will help the babies sleep longer and have better quality sleep. I have been working with babies for over 31 years. A chiropractic adjustment is very gentle with a very specific and precise treatment that improves the overall way their little bodies work, function, and of course sleep. If your baby can't sleep, why don't you give chiropractic a try? I've always said it's easier to build a child's future rather than repair and adult. So give it a try so that the baby and you have a chance to sleep through the night or at least to the next feeding time anyway. Thanks for reading, Dr. Joe.
