Why Does Your Back Keep “Going Out”?
If you’ve ever said, “I threw my back out again,” you’re not alone, and you’re definitely not imagining things. For many people, back pain isn’t a one-time event. It comes and goes, sometimes triggered by something as simple as bending over, tying a shoe, or picking up a laundry basket.
So what’s really happening? Why does it keep coming back?
Let’s break it down.
It’s Usually Not the Thing You Think Caused It
Most patients can point to a moment when their back “went out.” Maybe it was lifting a box or twisting the wrong way. But here’s the truth: that moment is often just the final straw, not the root cause.
Your spine doesn’t typically fail from one small movement. Instead, it’s the result of accumulated stress over time, poor posture, repetitive movements, lack of mobility, and underlying spinal dysfunction.
By the time your back “goes out,” the problem has likely been building for weeks, months, or even years.
Spinal Misalignments and Dysfunction
One of the biggest contributors to recurring back issues is spinal misalignment, also known as a subluxation. When the vertebrae aren’t moving properly, it creates stress on surrounding muscles, ligaments, and nerves.
This leads to:
- Muscle tightness or spasms
- Reduced range of motion
- Increased inflammation
- Compensation patterns throughout the body
Without correcting the underlying issue, your body keeps falling back into the same dysfunctional pattern, making future flare-ups more likely.
Muscle Memory Works Against You
Your body is incredibly efficient at learning patterns, even bad ones.
If your posture is off or your movement patterns are imbalanced, your muscles adapt. Over time, this creates muscle memory that reinforces dysfunction, not stability.
That’s why even after the pain goes away, the problem isn’t truly “fixed.” The same faulty movement patterns are still there, just waiting to be triggered again.
Weakness and Instability
Another common piece of the puzzle is lack of core stability. Your spine relies on surrounding muscles, especially your core, to stay supported.
When those muscles are weak or not firing properly:
- The spine becomes more vulnerable to stress
- Small movements can create big problems
- Injuries are more likely to repeat
This is why strengthening and stabilizing exercises are often a key part of long-term relief.
You Only Treat the Pain, Not the Cause
A lot of people wait until they’re in significant pain before doing anything about it. They rest, take medication, maybe use heat or ice, and once the pain subsides, they go right back to normal life.
The problem?
Pain relief doesn’t equal problem solved.
Pain relief doesn’t equal problem solved.
If the underlying dysfunction isn’t addressed, the cycle continues:
- Pain appears
- Pain is managed
- Pain disappears
- Normal activity resumes
- Pain returns
Sound familiar?
So How Do You Break the Cycle?
To stop your back from “going out” repeatedly, you need to shift from reactive care to proactive care.
At Sheppard Chiropractic, we focus on:
- Identifying and correcting spinal dysfunction
- Improving joint mobility and alignment
- Restoring proper movement patterns
- Supporting strength and stability
- Educating patients on posture and daily habits
Chiropractic adjustments help restore proper motion in the spine, reducing stress on the nervous system and allowing your body to function the way it was designed to.
But just as important is what happens between visits, how you move, sit, stand, and take care of your body every day.
The Bottom Line
Your back isn’t “randomly” going out. It’s responding to underlying issues that haven’t been fully addressed.
The good news?
Once you understand the cause, you can start to fix it, and more importantly, prevent it.
