What is the Conjugate Method?

So, Dr. Joe why is the conjugate method so important to my workouts. It’s a very simple but essential answer. As I got my Westside barbell conjugate certification in 2019, I was able to realize the importance of continually changing, adapting and being creative with your workout routines on a consistent regular basis.

Research shows that within approximately 2 to 3 weeks your body will adapt to your workouts and will not continue to grow or get stronger but what it will do is actually decondition the muscles, joints and ligaments. I grew up in the 80s where all I did was the supersets, pyramids and four sets of five. I basically did the same work out just about every time with varying degrees of higher/ lower weights or reps. While I know that it did help me become very strong when I was a teenager, I do feel like it may be having been the cause of episodic injuries that continue to plague me into my 40s and 50s.

What the Westside Barbell Conjugate system teaches you is that you are always changing and adapting. This includes different angles, bands, chains, Olympic and specialty bars. We were never designed to be doing the same thing over and over again. Hundreds and thousands of years ago, our ancestors never did the same thing every day. Their lifestyle was never about eating, lifting, pushing, carrying or pulling the same thing. They always did something different on a every day. That goes to show for any other type of workout that you may be doing whether it’s CrossFit, resistance bands, weight training, cardio or just basic running. You should be constantly modifying, adapting, thinking of new techniques interval intervals and ways of training. This is to ensure that your body is always pushed to a higher limit. Our bodies have always adapted… so the more you continue to throw at it, the bigger, stronger, faster and healthier you will become. So, remember always do something different, variety is the spice of life and practice a Conjugate system.
