Health & Recovery Tips From Dr. Joe

Ice, Ice & More Ice

Ice helps to reduce swelling, inflammation and pain. I recommend that you apply ice to your neck or back a minimum of 4-5 times a day for 15 minutes each time. More is better. Heat might feel good but will increase pain, stiffness and swelling.

Correct Your Sleeping Position

In order to get a good night’s sleep I recommend that you sleep on you back or side and never on your belly. Sleeping on your stomach can increase pain levels, pinch nerves and cause muscle spasms. When sleeping on your back place a pillow under your knees to maintain the natural Lumbar curve and reduce irritation to the back. When on your side put a pillow between your knees to keep your lower back and hip from rotating. Keep your neck in proper position with a slightly rolled up pillow on your back or a Chiropractic curve pillow to enhance the nature Lordosis curve of the neck. When on your side, keep head in alignment with your body with a pillow that doesn’t wedge your neck.

Posture At The Computer

Work and play environments often involve the use of computers. Proper posture and head position can prevent irritatation of the neck or upper back. Positioning your computer screen at eye level and making sure the location of your mouse pad allows a natural shoulder position are key to reducing neck tension and headaches.

Sitting on The Problem

Generally men put the wallet in the back pocket of the dominant hand. The average wallet is about ¾ of an inch and sitting on it causes an abnormal alignment of the pelvis increasing back and leg pain. I recommend a money clip and cleanout wallet placed in your front pockets.

High Heels, Posture & Back Pain

High heels push the center mass of the body forward, arching the back and pinching nerves. This moves the hips and back out of natural alignment. The higher the heel the worse the pressure is on the back. Flats or 1” heels are recommended for proper mechanics and alignment. Additionally, crossing your legs at the knee while sitting increases hip rotation, which contributes to poor alignment and nerve irritation.

Nutrition

Your body needs proper nutrients to heal and repair. Standard Process Ligaplex I contains key nutrients that provide acute injury healing and muscle/ligament support. The Essential Food supplement ingredients support the body's normal connective tissue, healthy joint movement and muscle repair.
